Unit conversion confusion isn't a sign of poor math skills — it's a sign that you're dealing with systems that were built at different times, by different people, for different purposes. The metric system is logical and decimal-based. The imperial system (used in the US, and partially in the UK) is a historical patchwork. And then there are units like data storage that were invented after both systems.

1. Kilometers to Miles (and Back)

The conversion factor: 1 kilometer = 0.621371 miles. Or roughly: 1 km ≈ 0.62 miles, meaning 10 km ≈ 6.2 miles.

Easy mental shortcut: Divide kilometers by 1.6 to get approximate miles. Or multiply miles by 1.6 to get kilometers. This works because 1 mile ≈ 1.609 km.

Example: A 5K race is 5 × 0.62 = 3.1 miles. A 26.2-mile marathon is 26.2 × 1.609 = 42.2 km.

2. Celsius to Fahrenheit

The formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. The reverse: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

Key reference points to memorize:

• 0°C = 32°F (freezing)
• 20°C = 68°F (room temperature)
• 37°C = 98.6°F (body temperature)
• 100°C = 212°F (boiling)

Quick mental shortcut for everyday temperatures: Double the Celsius, then add 30. So 22°C → (22×2)+30 = 74°F. (Actual answer: 71.6°F — close enough for everyday use.)

3. Kilograms to Pounds

1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. Roughly: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs.

To convert kg to lbs, multiply by 2.2. To convert lbs to kg, divide by 2.2 (or multiply by 0.45).

Example: A person weighing 70 kg = 70 × 2.2 = 154 lbs. A 200 lb American person = 200 ÷ 2.2 = 90.9 kg.

4. Square Feet to Square Meters

Area conversions confuse people because you're squaring the linear conversion factor. 1 foot = 0.3048 meters, so 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.0929 square meters.

Practical conversion: 1 m² = 10.764 ft². To convert m² to ft², multiply by 10.76. To convert ft² to m², divide by 10.76.

Example: A 100 m² apartment = 100 × 10.76 = 1,076 square feet.

5. Liters to Gallons (US vs UK)

This one has a trap: US and UK gallons are different. 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters. 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters.

If you're converting fuel economy (mpg to L/100km), make sure you know which gallon is being used. US fuel economy figures cannot be directly compared to UK mpg figures because of this difference.

6. Bytes to Kilobytes, Megabytes, Gigabytes

There are actually two systems, which creates endless confusion:

• Binary (used in computing): 1 kilobyte = 1,024 bytes. 1 megabyte = 1,024 KB = 1,048,576 bytes. 1 gigabyte = 1,024 MB.
• Decimal (used in hard drive marketing): 1 kilobyte = 1,000 bytes. 1 megabyte = 1,000 KB. 1 gigabyte = 1,000 MB.

This is why a "1TB" hard drive shows as 931GB in Windows — the drive manufacturer uses decimal (1,000,000,000,000 bytes) but Windows uses binary (1TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes).

7. Acres to Square Kilometers

1 acre = 0.00405 km². Or: 1 km² = 247 acres. In practice: 100 acres ≈ 0.4 km².

This conversion matters for agriculture, real estate, and geography. A football field is about 1.32 acres. A square mile is 640 acres.

8. Meters per Second to Kilometers per Hour

1 m/s = 3.6 km/h (multiply by 3.6). 1 km/h = 0.2778 m/s (divide by 3.6).

This comes up in physics problems constantly. A sprinter running 10 m/s is running 36 km/h.

9. Inches to Centimeters

1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. 1 cm = 0.3937 inches.

To convert inches to cm: multiply by 2.54. To convert cm to inches: divide by 2.54.

Common references: 6 feet = 182.9 cm. A standard US letter page (8.5 × 11 inches) = 21.6 × 27.9 cm.

10. Ounces to Grams

Two types: fluid ounces (volume) vs weight ounces — they're different things. For weight: 1 ounce = 28.35 grams. 1 pound = 16 ounces = 453.6 grams.

For cooking conversions from US recipes: 1 cup of water = 8 fluid ounces = 236.6 mL (because water has a density of ~1g/mL).
